Caring for our communities

We believe healthier communities create healthier tomorrow for our patients, colleagues and the communities in which we live and serve.

Serving as an anchor institution

Our commitment to care extends beyond the walls of our facility.

In addition to the grassroots efforts of our colleagues, HCA Healthcare and the HCA Healthcare Foundation invest in strategic partnerships aimed at increasing access to quality care and expanding our collective impact across the enterprise.

HCA Healthcare has a long and rich tradition of caring for our communities through donations, foundation investments and colleague participation in locally focused giving and volunteering campaigns. In 2024, HCA Healthcare and the HCA Healthcare Foundation gave more than $48.5 million to community organizations across the country. In addition, our colleagues logged nearly 240,000 volunteer hours and contributed $18 million with HCA Healthcare matching.

We know there are many ways to champion health, and we stand ready to support our communities through a variety of emergency scenarios while also advancing sustainability initiatives.

HCA Healthcare Foundation

More than 40 years ago, HCA Healthcare co-founder Dr. Thomas Frist Sr. established the HCA Healthcare Foundation by contributing company resources as a gift back to our local Middle Tennessee community. In 2020, CEO Sam Hazen established the Healthier Tomorrow Fund, which had an initial investment of $75 million, to expand HCA Healthcare’s philanthropic footprint and help address health equity and community needs across all the communities we serve.

Established in 2020 as an $80 million community impact fund, this fund aims to address high-priority community needs. Through the Healthier Tomorrow Fund, HCA Healthcare and the HCA Healthcare Foundation have recently announced donations to support career pathways for underserved high school students, improve access to healthy food and address mental wellness among young adults.

Caring for Communities

Our colleagues are vital to our ability to support our communities. Each year, we help our colleagues learn about community issues and nonprofit organizations, encourage service with paid volunteer time, amplify their giving through matching gifts, and provide support and training for colleagues who serve on nonprofit boards.

Our impact in action

Since 1998, the HCA Healthcare Foundation has provided over $294 million to more than 500 community organizations through grants and gift matching. The HCA Healthcare Today blog tells the stories of HCA Healthcare’s community investment.

The importance of small donations

Every donation makes a big impact. Through HCA Healthcare’s donation matching and care card programs, the impact our colleagues can have on causes they are passionate about and organizations they support in their communities is amplified. Together, we change more lives, in more ways.

Our partnerships

We strive to actively engage and serve as an anchor institution in our communities through strategic partnerships and community-based relationships. The impact and work driving these collaborations focus on the following key areas: improving health and access to care, championing positive mental wellness, responding to crisis and community needs and increasing opportunity and access to healthcare careers.

Emergency response

In the event of a crisis, our Enterprise Emergency Operations Center (EEOC) is available 24/7 to support our facilities by monitoring potential risks, creating response plans, redirecting our supply chain and transferring patients as needed. The EEOC is comprised of leaders from 30 enterprise functional areas with expertise in clinical care, logistics and supply chain, risk management, transportation and local communities who are supported by cutting-edge technology and knowledge of the entire HCA Healthcare enterprise.
